Incomplete Information
The “information” section of your fan page is very important. If your Facebook fans have questions about your business, such as your website address, phone number, store hours, or physical address, they’re going to check your info. Leaving essential information out will only inconvenience and annoy your fans, and it could cost you a phone call or a visit.
Meaningless Picture
The main picture on your page is what people will see and associate with your business on Facebook. Don’t choose a generic, meaningless picture, such as a stock photo, a pretty landscape photo, or a photo of something unrecognizable. The best thing to put here is your brand’s logo. If you don’t put in your logo, at least include a photograph of your store, building, popular product, mascot, or something else that is uniquely associated with your business.
No Custom Tabs
Facebook allows you to create tabs that are different sections of your page. You don’t have to use this feature, but you should. You can create custom tabs that bring your fans to things like unique promotions, valuable information, coupons, or entertainment. Just make sure these custom tabs are clearly defined so that people know what’s behind them and where to find what they’re looking for in particular. Your custom tabs should not be mystery tabs.
Scarce Updates
Updating your Facebook page is what will keep your business popping up into the news-feeds of your fans and reminding them about you. These updates will also show visitors to your page that your business is up and running, alive and well. Be sure to update frequently and on a regular basis. Don’t quit, or your page (and your business) will seem abandoned.
Limited Interaction
When people post on your wall, how are you responding? If people comment on your updates, what do you say? Your fan page is not a place where people want to express their opinions just for the sake of doing so. They want you to respond, to answer their questions, and to acknowledge them. Doing so will allow you to create a more personal connection with your fans, and it will show them that their feedback matters to you a great deal, which they’ll appreciate, too.
No Vanity URL
A vanity URL allows you to create a URL that’s easy for people to follow, and it’s incredibly important. You can post your vanity URL in print materials, for example, and people will know exactly where to go to find your page. It’s a lot better than a string of random numbers. It will also make it easy for your fans who visit your page to remember the URL.
